Shades help - Toolbars

Toolbars

There are always displayed two toolbars, one main and one mode-dependent. The main one is always on top of the whole window and does not change; the latter can appear either right under it (default position), or in the bottom on top of statusbar. Since mode-dependent toolbars are described in their mode topics, this part will focus on main toolbar.

File buttons
First group of buttons works indeed the same way as in most programs and as you would expect from their icons - Open, Save and Save as. Their respective keyboard shortcuts are CtrlO, CtrlS and none. If you want, you can switch in options on or off (default) additional button for closing the program, which appears as first in this group.

Right-clicking the open button opens a menu with "special files" - built-in pictures for testing. They can be also accessed by entering their name in form "about:something" in open dialog. As of version 4.7, the following are included:

Zoom and background buttons
The second group's buttons affect the overall display of edited picture, regardless on viewing mode. The two small ones are for zooming; preferred and more powerful method is via keyboard (+, - on numpad) and middle mouse button, though. The only "normal" button here is for bringing up the background dialog (B) - see topic Background.

View mode buttons
Third group buttons change the way picture is displayed, or in my personal terminology, viewing mode. This has its own topic. Buttons D, N, S.

Editing mode buttons
The next three buttons switch editing modes: Areas, Pixels, Moving - on keyboard A, P and M. Each editing mode has its own topic - no further info here.

Undo/redo buttons
Two arrow buttons invoke undo/redo. Shades have unlimited undo, which means you can always undo everything back to the initial picture state. Still, if you work on a ridiculously low memory machine, you can disable this behaviour by setting maximal undo level in options. Keyboard shortcuts are CtrlZ and AltBackspace for undo and CtrlY and CtrlR for redo.

Other buttons
The last group includes button for options window (CtrlO) and help & about window. You won't probably need these every so often.
